The Benefits of Modular Website Design and Development

For a long time, when designing a website, you would typically use a template.  You might adapt it and alter elements to achieve the look that you want, but this was the key way to create one.  The same applies to the main aspects of programmes like WordPress – pages and posts come with templates for different purposes.  However, there is a new way to design a website that is in the process of overthrowing the traditional template – it is known as modular website design.

What is modular design?

Modular design is a system where everything is built with a block grid pattern.  Each element of the design fits into the modules.  The basic idea has been around for a long time – newspapers would use modules to create space on the page and insert a story in to each.  Modular design in offices is a common way to create small spaces for specific uses.  And of course, Lego is the ultimate in modular design with each Lego brick being a module that fits together with others to create anything from a car to a spaceship.

Benefits of modular design

When we are talking about modular design and websites, then the benefits are impressive, and there are a lot of them.  However, let’s look at a few that can interest anyone, web designer or not.

Freedom of design

Modular design frees up the whole web design and development process in a way never seen before.  By moving beyond template web pages, designers can manage and control content without the previous limits of a pre-defined layout.  It means there is no set pattern, no formula to follow and much less chance of your site looking like someone else’s.

Design flexibility

That freedom comes from the design flexibility that is inherent to modular styles.  You can create a responsive design, adaptive content and a website that can shift priorities as a business does.  It means you can always ensure that your site generates an excellent user experience (UX) which is one of the big factors that search engines look at when rating a website.

Consistent design going forward

Modular design also creates a user interface style guide that culture content creators, designers and developers can easily follow to create content design in the future.  So, while the requirements of the website might change as the business does there will be core elements that remain the same and have that consistency to create branding.

Recycling modules

Because modules are adaptable and reusable, you can essentially recycle them for a new purpose.  It means that when you want to create something new – say a new website for a recent feature of your business – you can use the modules from the first website to make the new one.  It is cost effective and saves a lot of time.

Control your website

With modular design, web designers can control your site in an entirely new and more comprehensive way.  They can ensure that there is consistency and branding while making changes and alterations easily with minimal disruption.  There’s little doubt that modular design is the way forward.
